The exhausted person climbing the ladder of success | Tim Keller Sermon Illustrations

Surrounding biblical exposition

Keller explains the consequences of a society built on self-salvation.
Isaiah contrasts the lofty city with the strong city. The strong city enjoys peace because its security comes from God. The lofty city, however, is characterised by exhaustion and oppression.

Illustration – The endless climb

Imagine someone who has worked extremely hard to reach a prestigious position.
At first, reaching that position feels like success. But immediately, new anxieties appear:
Can I maintain my position?
Will I be successful tomorrow?
What happens if someone else overtakes me?
Can I continue to meet everyone’s expectations?
The higher the person climbs, the more nervous and restless he becomes.
He never feels secure because his identity depends on continuing to achieve.
Keller explains that this is the exhaustion of the lofty city. When people have to create their own identity through performance, they never experience lasting peace.

Illustration’s point

When your identity depends on success, you can never rest. The Gospel frees people from having to prove their worth through achievement.
